Day Trip
Once part of the powerful Bungo Province, Usuki City, on the east coast of Kyushu, is steeped in history. Perched on a hill in the center of the city, the castle remains overlook the charming city which has grown up around the old castle town. Indeed, much remains of the castle town and it makes for a picturesque setting for part of our tour.
Religion has also played an important part in shaping Usuki including Christianity, Buddhism and the native Shinto beliefs. During the tour you will learn more about the role religion has played in the area with a particular focus on Buddhism. We visit centuries-old Buddhist statues carved into the local stone, are guided in a Zazen, seated meditation session and enjoy Shojin Ryori- Buddhist cuisine which has been taken to exceptional levels.
Designed as an easily accessible day trip, the tour starts and Usuki train station where you will be met by your experienced, bilingual guide. Together you will enjoy an easy-paced walk around the charming, old castle town. After lunch, a short commute takes us to a quiet village on the outskirts of the city and our afternoon walk to the Usuki Stone Buddhas, a National Treasure, where, after fully enjoying this awe-inspiring site, our tour comes to a close.
For those who are fortunate enough to be able to extend their visit in Usuki, we offer a number of hands-on, cultural experiences and even an overnight stay with local farmers whose warm hospitality is sure to be a highlight of any trip.
